Bed-Stuy Arts Residency was an incredible residency to attend it was the first artist residency I attended where I was the only artist in residence. Before attending this residency I finished my series Enveloped by the Sun the month prior and wanted to start something new and different. So I explored a new style of making that involved creating “plant-scapes” which are plant landscapes that incorporate collaged photographs.
During my time in this residency I spent half of it working on my paintings and the other half reconnecting with friends and people I already knew in NYC. I also spent time visiting many exhibitions since it was Frieze Week in NYC. Some of my favorite memories from that time were spending time with my then-girlfriend, now wife, Destiny Belgrave. She was an artist in residence at Smack Mellon, and we would often visit each other's studios and support eachother.
